I wanted a easy way to monitor your home network. I&#8217;ve used <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nagios.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nagios<\/a><\/strong> in the past and it worked great in a business setting but it is a little overkill for a home network\/lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/louislam\/uptime-kuma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Uptime-Kuma<\/a><\/strong> is an easily configured and lightweight way to monitor your home network\/lab especially if you are already running Docker. While having a Docker environment setup isn&#8217;t necessary to use Uptime-Kuma, it definitely makes life easier installing, upgrading and you don&#8217;t have to dedicate a computer just run Uptime-Kuma (unless you know how to run multiple web servers on a single server, etc.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My example Docker-compose file<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>version: \"3.1\"\n\nservices:\n  uptime-kuma:\n    image: louislam\/uptime-kuma:1.13.1\n    networks:\n     - proxy\n    volumes:\n      - \/etc\/localtime:\/etc\/localtime:ro\n      - \/mnt\/swarm\/uptime-kuma\/data:\/app\/data\n    environment:\n    ports:\n      - 3001:3001\n    restart: unless-stopped\n    security_opt:\n      - no-new-privileges:true<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Once your container is up and running you can access Uptime-Kuma via http:\/\/serverip:3001<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Dashboard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"933\" src=\"https:\/\/ebnet.local.ebnet.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Uptime-Kuma-Dashboard-1024x933.png\" alt=\"Uptime-Kuma-Dashboard\" class=\"wp-image-855\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ebnet.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Uptime-Kuma-Dashboard-1024x933.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.ebnet.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Uptime-Kuma-Dashboard-300x273.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ebnet.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Uptime-Kuma-Dashboard-768x700.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ebnet.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Uptime-Kuma-Dashboard.png 1040w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Setting up monitors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Uptime-Kuma has 7 different kind of monitors<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>HTTP(s) <\/strong>&#8211; Monitor a web server<\/li><li><strong>TCP Port <\/strong>&#8211; Connect to a specific port to make sure a service is accepting connections<\/li><li><strong>Ping<\/strong> &#8211; Simple ping to check if device is connected to your network<\/li><li><strong>HTTP(s) &#8211; Keyword<\/strong> &#8211; Not only connect to a web server but also check for text to ensure a web page is being rendered<\/li><li><strong>DNS<\/strong> &#8211; Query a DNS server to make sure your domain name resolution is working<\/li><li><strong>Push<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Steam Game Server<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here&#8217;s an easy monitor to monitor if your Internet is working<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"853\" height=\"826\" src=\"https:\/\/ebnet.local.ebnet.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Uptime-Kuma-DNS-Monitor.png\" alt=\"Uptime-Kuma-DNS-Monitor\" class=\"wp-image-856\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ebnet.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Uptime-Kuma-DNS-Monitor.png 853w, https:\/\/www.ebnet.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Uptime-Kuma-DNS-Monitor-300x291.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ebnet.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Uptime-Kuma-DNS-Monitor-768x744.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 853px) 100vw, 853px\" \/><figcaption>This will connect to an external DNS server and resolve Google.com. If any of these 2 steps fail you&#8217;re probably having Internet problems<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Notifications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A monitoring server isn&#8217;t much use unless it can alert you when it detects a problem. Luckily Uptime-Kuma supports a wide number of notifications from email to webhooks. I have been using a free Pushover account for years which pushes notifications to my phone so I was happy to see Uptime-Kuma had built in support for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While I wish Uptime-Kuma had some more types of monitors, it is more than adequate to monitor your Internet connection, smart home devices and your home lab if you have one. The project is active and the developer is adding new features which I&#8217;m looking forward to!
